Bayside park turned into garbage dump

From NY1:

Last week, after several coaches and parents in Little Bay Park repeatedly tried to get the Parks Department to help them improve their local youth soccer and baseball fields, park officials delivered dirt to the fields.

Yet when volunteers went to spread the dirt onto the fields, they found it was full of glass bottles, dirty diapers and even syringes.

"I was appalled," said coach and parent Lauro Vasquez. "Something like this, it blows your mind that the Parks Department would even do something like that."

Parks officials said the dirt came from Cunningham Park in Queens, where they store excavated dirt. They believed someone broke into the site and dumped the garbage there. Crews then inadvertently delivered it to Little Bay Park.

Vasquez said the filthy dirt is just a latest example of disregard for their park. He said the condition of the fields are often so bad they can't even use them.
