SI pol encourages more development

The plan to redevelop the former Stapleton home port site is drawing little interest from developers because it is too rigid and won't be able to make enough money, according to a Democratic state lawmaker.

State Sen. Diane Savino (D-East Shore/Brooklyn) said there is "not enough flexibility" in the latest proposal and greater housing density is essential to raise the profitability factor and lure developers.

Plan to redevelop home port is lagging

"Quite frankly, I think she [Ms. Savino] is mistaken when she talks about the need for more housing there," said [Councilman Michael] McMahon. "If you need a few more units than 350, OK. But have people forgotten that overdevelopment is what got us into the mess we are in? That it has put a strain on our existing infrastructure?"

She probably hasn't forgotten. The developer might have just written her a big check.
